What trenchless covers

Trenchless sewer repair is a family of methods for fixing or replacing a buried sewer line from inside the pipe or through one or two small access points, instead of digging a trench along its whole length. Under a Boston property that length runs from the basement wall under the yard, the front walk and the sidewalk to a main in the street. A trench along that path means a week of excavation, a street-opening permit and a police detail, and another week of putting things back. Trenchless methods fix the pipe in a day and leave the surface alone. the verified installer covering Boston is the verified installer covering Boston and Suffolk County.

The three methods

Cured-in-place pipe lining pulls or inverts a resin-saturated liner into the cleaned pipe and cures it into a new, jointless pipe inside the old one. It works through the cleanout, takes about a day, and fixes cracked, root-intruded, corroded and infiltrating lines that still hold their shape. It is the method behind most trenchless repairs in Suffolk County. Pipe bursting pulls a bursting head through the old pipe from a pit at each end, splitting it outward while new HDPE pipe follows. It replaces lines that have collapsed, bellied or flattened, and it can upsize an undersized lateral at the same time. Sectional point repair cures a short sleeve at a single defect, a bad joint or one root intrusion, in a couple of hours, when the rest of the pipe is sound.

How the method is chosen

By the camera, not by a sales pitch. A camera inspection travels the lateral from the cleanout to the main, records every defect with its distance and depth, and the recommendation follows from the footage: jet it if it is sound but dirty, spot-repair it if one joint is bad, line it if it is failing along its length, burst it if it has lost its shape. You should receive the recording and a written finding before any method is quoted, and the quote should say which footage it is based on. The methods are explained side by side at the CIPP installer directory.

What fails under Boston homes

The oldest houses drain through vitrified clay laid in short jointed lengths more than a century ago; the joints have opened under a hundred winters of frost, and maple and oak roots have found them. Between the wars, cast iron came in, and under a basement slab it corrodes along the bottom until the pipe is a channel. Postwar tracts used Orangeburg, which goes oval and then flat. Everything since the 1970s is PVC, which cracks or separates at a joint when the ground moves and bellies over poor backfill. Spring groundwater infiltrates all of them at any open joint. Each has a trenchless answer, and the camera tells which.

What a job involves

A residential trenchless repair in Boston is normally one day, in any season: camera and cleaning in the morning, the liner curing or the bursting pull by midday, reinstatement and the final video in the afternoon. The water is off for a few hours during a liner cure. The contractor pulls the plumbing permit and, for anything under the public way, the street-opening permit, and schedules the inspections. You receive the before and after video and a written warranty.

Choosing a contractor

Ask for the pre-inspection video, the method and why, the material and its rated life, the warranty in writing, the permit plan, and whether the crew doing the work is the company you hired. The network's installer verification checks license, equipment and completed work before a contractor is listed; the directory is at find a verified contractor.

Questions we hear about trenchless sewer repair

What does trenchless sewer repair actually include?+

Three methods. Cured-in-place lining rebuilds the pipe from inside through the cleanout. Pipe bursting replaces it through two small pits. Sectional point repair cures a short sleeve at a single defect. Camera inspection and hydro jetting support all three.

Is trenchless really no digging at all?+

Lining and sectional repair work through the existing cleanout with no excavation. Bursting needs a small pit at each end of the run. In every case the yard, the walk, the basement slab and the street between are left alone, which is where a trench does its damage.

Can it be done in winter?+

Yes. The work happens inside the pipe, below the frost line, and the cure is heat-driven. Crews line and burst laterals in Suffolk County year-round. A frozen yard is an argument for trenchless, not against it.

Is trenchless cheaper than digging?+

Usually, once the cost of restoring what a trench destroys is counted: landscaping, the front walk, the driveway, the basement floor, the street patch and the police detail. Under a basement slab or a street the difference is large. The estimate is free and names the method and what it covers.

How do I get started?+
