Trenchless methods
Sectional point repair in Boston
One bad joint does not always need a full-length liner. A sectional repair cures a short sleeve exactly where the defect is, usually in a couple of hours, with nothing dug up.

The case for fixing one spot
Not every Boston sewer line with a problem has a problem everywhere. A camera often shows sixty feet of sound pipe and one bad joint: a crack where a maple root got in, a joint that opened under one bad frost season, a connection that was never sealed properly, a spot where groundwater comes in every spring. Lining the whole run would fix it, but it would be more than the pipe needs. A sectional point repair, also called a spot repair or a short liner, cures a sleeve of the same cured-in-place material exactly where the defect is and leaves the rest of the pipe alone.
How it works
The sleeve is a short length of fiberglass or felt saturated with resin, wrapped around an inflatable packer. The camera has already measured the defect's distance from the cleanout, so the packer is pushed or pulled to that distance with the camera watching. The packer is inflated, pressing the sleeve against the pipe wall and across the defect, and the resin cures in place in an hour or two. The packer is deflated and withdrawn, and the camera records the cured sleeve. The defect is sealed, the joint is structurally bridged, and the pipe on either side is untouched. the verified installer for Boston does this work across Suffolk County.
What it fixes
A single cracked or broken joint. A root intrusion at one point, after the roots are cut out. A modest offset where one pipe section has shifted at a joint. A leaking branch connection. A short length of corrosion in an otherwise sound cast iron line. Infiltration at one spot where groundwater is coming in. In each case the pipe before and after the defect has to be sound, which is what the camera inspection establishes before the repair is proposed.
What it does not fix
A line with defects every few feet, which is what century-old clay in Suffolk County usually looks like, is a full-liner job, not a string of sectional repairs; past two or three sleeves the full liner is both cheaper and better. A belly cannot be fixed by a sleeve, because the problem is the slope, not the wall. A collapse is a bursting job. A good proposal explains which of these the camera found. The methods are compared at the CIPP reference.
Time, access and disruption
A sectional repair is the least disruptive trenchless method there is. It works through the cleanout, needs the water off for an hour or two, and is usually finished in half a day including the camera work. Nothing is dug, inside or outside the house, in any season. For a landlord with one tenant complaint or a seller with one item on an inspection report, it is often the whole answer.
Documentation
You should receive the pre-repair video showing the defect, the post-repair video showing the cured sleeve, and the warranty. As with any lining work, the installer should be able to show license, equipment and completed jobs; verified installers are listed at the installer directory.

Questions we hear about sectional point repair
How long is a sectional liner?+
Usually two to six feet, enough to cover the defect and bond to sound pipe on either side. Several sleeves can be set in one line if the camera finds two or three separate defects.
How is it put in the right place?+
The camera measures the defect's distance from the cleanout. The sleeve is wrapped on an inflatable packer, pushed to that distance with the camera watching, inflated against the wall and cured. The camera confirms position before and after.
Is a sectional repair as strong as a full liner?+
At the defect, yes; it is the same material cured the same way. The difference is coverage: a sectional repair fixes one spot, a full liner fixes the whole line. If the rest of the pipe is sound, the sectional repair is the right amount of work.
Can it stop groundwater coming into my basement line?+
If the infiltration is at one joint, yes; the sleeve seals it. Infiltration at many joints, which a high water table in spring will find in old clay, calls for a full liner.
How do I get a quote?+
Call or send the form; a camera inspection is scheduled first and the quote names the repair and where it goes. Estimates are free; call now.
